We have largely discussed here the importance of onlin videos. Users and consumers are consuming more and more videos.

It seems that this move is endless, since every month the stats get higher. The last stats, for example, come from comScore, and they say more than 13 billion videos were watched on Google's YouTube last month in the United States (imagine how bigger that number may be if they had included the rest of the world).

The total of internet (U.S) users that watched online videos (on March) was 180 million (an average of 173.3 per user!), that is 3.5% more than February.

Most of this activity was produced on YouTube: more than 40% of the market belongs to the Google's videos website. However, their share of that total dropped slightly as a percentage, but its total number of videos viewed jumped from 11.95 billion in February to 13.05 billion in March.

Some more interesting details provided by comScore:

The top video ad networks in terms of their actual reach delivered were: Joost Video Network (by Adconion Media Group) with 38.0 percent penetration of online video viewers, SpotXchange Video Ad Network with 19.9 percent, and BBE with 19.1 percent.

84.8 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.

135.3 million viewers watched 12.9 billion videos on YouTube.com (95.6 videos per viewer).

The average Hulu viewer watched 26.7 videos, totaling 2.6 hours of video per viewer.

The duration of the average online video was 4.3 minutes.

One of the great things about SEO world is that it's always dynamic. Could you imagine some years ago that SEO would go towards localization on real-world business? Was it conceivable some weeks ago to think of a Google tool to help you find who you may be interested to follow on Twitter?

This week announced a new twist in SEO world: be found even if you are not found. Weird, ah? Well, that's actually what they are offering by releasing their new "Similar" feature on their search engine.

Now, if you are signed in during your search, you will find a "Similar" link on the right side of the first result that appears on the list, like this:

However, Google is trying to make this feature more visible. Starting this week, for queries where similar sites are likely to be helpful, they’ll display a list of "Pages similar" at the bottom of the results page, like this:

So, if you own a website that is competing with other websites (and we are sure of that; there's no one without competition these days), your website has now more chances to appear on the results list.

Of course you may want your website to appear as THE result, and in order to get that you may want to acquire a Fulltraffic Package. But in addition to those packages, the chances to appear organically are higher, since you can also appear as a "similar" website to others.

The new AdWords-like ad platform for Twitter called TweetUp has added the popular Twitter client TweetDeck as a powerful publisher that will help both users to improve their ads performance and TweetUp's popularity.

How will it work? According to an email TweetUp founder Bill Gross sent to some of his company's early adopters, "TweetDeck will feature a separate search column for TweetUp results, where users can see continually updated results showing the best tweeters on topics of interest."

Moreover, TechCrunch will test ways to distribute TweetUp ads, “including a TweetUp search field, roll-over pop-ups tied to key words in their content, and others.”

Other TweetDeck and TechCrunch's announced partners are Twitterfeed, Answers.com, Business Insider and Seesmic, among others.

From TweetUp, on the other side, they said that “more deals are in the pipeline.”

Google's changed the name of Local Business Center to Google Places, thus making it closer to Places Pages. They also added some new features to the new "Places".

Local Business Center was the online tool that allowed business owners to make their business searchable on Places Pages. Places Pages connect people to information from across the web, displaying photos, reviews and essential facts, as well as real-time updates and offers from business owners.

Holding a Place Page enables business owners to verify and supplement their business information to include hours of operation, photos, videos, coupons, product offerings and more. It also lets them communicate with customers and get insights that help them make business decisions.

They used to claim a Place Page to Google through LBC, but from now they will do so through Google Places. Up until now, 4 million businesses have already claimed their Place Page.

There are over 50 million places on Places Pages, a tool that was launched last september.

According to Google, the following are the new tools of Google Places:

"Service areas: If you travel to serve customers, you can now show which geographic areas you serve. And if you run a business without a storefront or office location, you can now make your address private.

A new, simple way to advertise: For just $25 per month, businesses in select cities can make their listings stand out on Google.com and Google Maps with Tags. As of today, we’re rolling out Tags to three new cities — Austin, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. — in addition to ongoing availability in Houston and San Jose, CA. In the coming weeks we'll also be introducing Tags in Chicago, San Diego, Seattle, Boulder and San Francisco.

Business photo shoots: In addition to uploading their own photos, businesses in select cities can now request a free photo shoot of the interior of their business which we'll use to supplement existing photos of businesses on Place Pages. We've been experimenting with this over the past few months, and now have created a site for businesses to learn more and express their interest in participating.

Customized QR codes: From the dashboard page of Google Places, businesses in the U.S. can download a QR code that’s unique to their business, directly from their dashboard page. QR codes can be placed on business cards or other marketing materials, and customers can scan them with certain smartphones to be taken directly to the mobile version of the Place Page for that business.

Favorite Places: We're doing a second round of our Favorite Places program, and are mailing window decals to 50,000 businesses around the U.S. These decals include a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to directly view the mobile Place Page for the business to learn more about their great offerings."

To keep track of how your business listing is performing on Google, you have a personalized dashboard within Google Places that includes data about how many times people have found your business on Google, what keywords they used to find it and even what areas people traveled from to visit your business. With the dashboard, you can see how your use of any of these new features affects interest in your business and make more informed decisions about how to be found on Google and interact with your customers.

According to Google, one out of five searches on Google are related to location, and the company is trying to make the search engine more local.

They are also offering a series of webinar to let you learn how to use the new

Guy Wants to Use Google to Propose to His Fiancé

We don't listen about this kind of news very much. Indeed they probably are very common, but they are rarely made public.

Through a Google Search Help thread we learn that a guy called Stanislav Ponomarev from Natchitoches, LA, who is a student at Northwestern State University, asked this question:

um... Is there any way to put "%name%, will you marry me?" for a day on the front page of google web search? Maybe for a price?

Probably our friend Stanislav will need to use Google AdWords for this, and thus making one of the most original (and modern) ways to propose.

So, what do you think? Would you propose this are another "online" way to your fiancé?

	YouTube Problems on IE

This doesn't looks to be something normal. Although we know Google doesn't like Internet Explorer so much, what's happening's gone too far.

Some IE users are reporting that Google's YouTube videos are not playing on their browser. They are getting an error message that says "Operation Aborted" and are then being redirected to a page on Microsoft.com with more details.

There's a Help thread confirming the issue and saying they are working on a fix:

In the meantime, here's what I suggest as a quick work around so you're able to play videos without issues:

1. Try refreshing your browser a couple times. This should actually make videos play normally again without issues in Internet Explorer.

2. If the tip above didn't help, you could try temporarily switching to another browser (for example Firefox or Chrome) until the team has fixed the bug with Internet Explorer.

Thank you for your patience while the team's working on this issue. We hope to have everything back to normal soon!

Did any of you have this problem?

Google's augmented the detail level of the info you get on the Top Search Queries feature on your Webmaster Tools. If before Google just reported the average position at which your site’s pages appeared in the search results for a particular query, they are now providing more detailed data for each individual search query.

Click on a given search query in the Top Search Queries report and you will see a breakdown of the number of impressions and the amount of clickthrough for each position that your site’s pages appeared at in the search results associated with that query.

As you may know, impressions are the number of times that your site’s pages appeared in the search results for the query, and clickthrough is the number of times searchers clicked on that query’s search results to visit a page from your site.

Google added a list of your site's pages that were linked to from the search results for that search query, and they also implemented measures to increase the detail of the data overall.

In the past you could only see Top Search Queries data for your site's top 100 queries. Now Google significantly increased the number of queries they show: if your site ranks for more than 100 queries, you’ll see new pagination buttons at the bottom of the Top Search Queries table allowing you to page through a much larger sampling of the queries that return your site in search results.

And they even generate automatic charts, displaying them right within the page!

In that chart you can use a date range selector, similar to the Google Analytics' one. If you want to see what your site's top search queries were for a particular week, you can see the data for just that slice in time.

And if your site has numerous keywords that change frequently, they’ve added the ability to search through your site’s top search queries so that you can filter the data to exactly what you’re looking for in your query haystack.

So these improvements will give you a better picture of your website's performance in the results lists, and you can check it specifically after a Fulltraffic campaign!

Google has introduced the last week three interesting improvements on their search engine:

 more localized Google Suggest

 improved spell correction for names

 auto-correction for 31 languages

	Localization, localization, localization

Localization is the big issue this days on SEO. The rapid development of mobile browsing is feeding new companies dedicated to localization, while huge firms such as Google take the train and release more and more localization features.

The last Google's announcement is the enhanced localization characteristic of Google Suggest, a product launched last year. Now localization is not limited to differentiate between countries, but between areas within the United States.

For example, if you are in New York, you may search different things than if you were in Los Angeles.

In San Francisco [bart] is probably not Bart Simpson; it’s probably Bay Area Rapid Transit:

In Chicago there's a very well known NBA team:

	Spelling enhancements for names

Mispellings is a very common problem in online search. That's why Google's put special attention on it and they developed the necessary technology to help people find the things they need even if they are mistyped searches (with the “Did you mean” link).

Well, and what happens with mipelled names? It is even harder, since you cannot find the word in a dictionary or ask your teacher how you right this or that name.

Google's developed a very logic new tool: say the search engine the context of that name and it will help you find it. People usually know a little more about the person they are looking for than their name. For example, you can search for [cuts google] to find Matt Cutts. Adding the word [google] narrows the search and then the engine will suggest you the right-spelled name.

Up until now this new feature is in English for the U.S. only, but they said they will launch it in other countries and in other languages as well.

	Spelling auto-correction in 31 languages

Remember the "Did you mean" link? Google used to use it when it found a mispelling. Well, now the system saves that step and makes auto-correction when they’re highly confident in their correction.

In the past week they’ve expanded auto-correction to 31 languages across over 180 domains.

Be relevant. That's the (non so) secret behind SEO. Use Fulltraffic Packages to bring traffic, yes, but then be relevant to engage your users and keep on the top.

Do you want to be on the top of search engines' lists? Be relevant. That's what Google says to us again and again. And with their last tool called Google Follow Finder they prove how important this value is.

This new service is in Google Labs and it is designed to help you expand your Twitter network. And if you own a website and you want to engage your readers/customers, it will help you getting more and more followers that provide you traffic in the long term.

How does it work? Simply enter your Twitter account name and you’ll see a list of people you might be interested in following.

If you see someone you want to follow, just click “Follow on Twitter,” log in, and they’ll be added to your following list in Twitter. This integration is based on Twitter’s new @anywhere frameworks, which make it easy for any site to add Twitter functionality. Google’s using the frameworks to provide dynamic information about Twitter accounts and one-click following.

The lists in Google Follow Finder are generated using public following and follower lists on Twitter. For example, if you follow CNN and the New York Times on Twitter, and most people who follow CNN and the New York Times also tend to follow TIME, we'll suggest TIME as a “Tweep you might like.”

There's another list, called “Tweeps with similar followers”. This list is simply a list of accounts with similar follower lists to yours.

This is how Google Follow Finder looks after typing Fulltraffic:

Think a moment about your potential readers/customers using this tool. The more you tweet and the more you keep relevant, you have the best chances to show up in this search engine's subproduct. The more followers you have, the more you'll keep others' attraction. In this virtue circle, you can engage more and more users and enhance your SEO pressence.

An old/new factor becomes very relevant in SEO: website speed. Why old? Well, because we always knew that a website's loading and performance speed increases its chances, both in SEO and in user's retaining as well. Why new? Because Google's just made it "formal" by adding it to their search ranking algorythms.

That means they have included a new signal that informs users about the site's speed, meaning, how quickly a website responds to web requests.

Google's made internal studies which show that slow websites force users to spend less time on them. However, user happiness is not the only factor on which a site's speed influences. A fast website reduces operating costs as well.

So, you may be asking yourself now, how does Google to measure a website's speed? Well, there are many free tools out there that can help them do that, and they use a variety of them, comparing a site with others.

And you, as a webmaster, can use those tools too. Here are some of them, recommended by Google:

Page Speed, an open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and gives suggestions for improvement

YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed

WebPagetest shows a waterfall view of your pages' load performance plus an optimization checklist

In Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world as in the chart below. We've also blogged about site performance

 Many other tools on code.google.com/speed

Google says, however, that speed is not as heavy as the relevance of a page in the searches algorythm. "Currently, fewer than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal in our implementation and the signal for site speed only applies for visitors searching in English on Google.com at this point."

This means that if you haven't seen much change to your site rankings, then this site speed change possibly did not impact your site.

Whatever your speed situation is, it is always recommended to use the above tools in order to give your users the best experience you can give them.

Twitter is not just a status update tool anymore. Since Twitter Search was introduced, it became one of the most important search engines ever. In fact, it revolutionized the search paradigm and introduced the real time concept into it.

They have an incredibly fast growing pace. However, they still have some problems. One of them is to convince newcomers to sign up - many people just don't get what's this issue of tweeting about.

They are trying to solve this problem on twitter, and one of the ways they do this is by redesigning their homepage. That's their landing page, the only one that gives them the chance to catch the visitor. As they explain it on their blog:

"People who internalize the value of Twitter understand the power of this simple medium. But it hasn't been easy to make that value transparent or obvious for curious folks coming to Twitter for the first time."

Twitter's redesigned the homepage again, in order to show visitors what is happening in the twitterverse.

What are they looking for with this new design? This is how they explain it:

"We're intentionally featuring more dynamic content on the front page, revealing a sample of who's here, what folks are tweeting about, and the big topics that they're discussing. The homepage now features a set of algorithmically-selected top tweets that automatically appear every few seconds. It also highlights a random sampling of suggested sources; hover over any of them to see a profile summary and their latest tweet. Trending topics now scroll across the page, allowing us to present a large set of trends using little page real estate. Hovering over some of these trends will show a description explaining why the keyword is (or has recently been) popular."

This is a nice move, however, Twitter's retention power is controversial, and it is not sure people keep on using the tool after they knew it. This problem is not attacked by Twitter with their redesign, and it is doubtful they could.

So, what do you think Twitter could do in order to retain users?

Videos and Display Ads, Strong SEO Allies

The ways to drive traffic to your website are varied. As we usually say, you should combine Fulltraffic's SEO packages with some social media interaction and some investment in your blog/website.

Another way to get internet surfers' attraction is to display advertising and/or use video. Although this kind of advertising is usually available to big brands...

Last week, .Fox Networks (pronounced "dot-fox") and comScore unveiled the findings of U.K. study they made. Conclusion? Combinations of video and display advertising delivered a total of 300 million impressions, just in the U.K. online users' world.

They unveiled their findings at the Advertising Research Foundation's 2010 conference in New York. The study evaluated results from four campaigns across the Travel, Finance, Government and Utilities sectors.

The key findings:

Video and display ads both successfully increased brand engagement. The average uplift across all the campaigns was an increase in site visitation by more than a factor of seven over a four week period following exposure to an ad. Consumers were 3 times more likely to conduct search queries using the brand or relevant generic terms in the same time period.

Consumers exposed to video were 28 percent more likely to visit the brand site and nearly twice as likely to conduct a trademark search. This in comparison to display advertising.

Video's impact was more immediate in the first five exposures. However, those who were exposed to display ads were likely to response positively to the brand in a more steady rythm. The more the ads impressiones rised, the more the users were likely to visit the website.

This was in the U.K.

In the U.S, people watched 32.4 billion videos during January 2010, according to comScore. In addition, they made 15.2 billion core searches that month. This means Americans watched more than twice as many videos as they conducted searches.

Giants Google and Facebook have recently made employments changes on their ads departments.

	David Fischer

Facebook's hired David Fischer. The exec. comes from Google, where he worked as VP of Global Online Sales & Operations. In Facebook he will serve as VP of Advertising and Global Operations.

On the other side, Google's just hired Amit Singh. The exec. comes from Oracle, where he exposed his skills during 20 years. He will work as Google’s VP of International Sales for Google’s enterprise business.

About David Fischer, both Google and Facebook published a statement. Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg: “It’s a testament to Facebook’s expanding opportunities in advertising that we’re able to welcome an executive of David’s caliber. I have worked closely with David over the years and witnessed his passion, energy, and effectiveness at building teams on a global scale. David’s arrival deepens our operational capabilities so we can build upon our ability to serve advertisers, regardless of size or location, that are building their brands on Facebook.”

Google: “We thank David for his many contributions to Google and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Earlier this month we've discussed about Google's inclusion of stars on its results lists. This feature is intended to make it easier for you to remember your previous searches/findings.

Now Google announces an additional tool in their system, which could complement the first one. It is about lists in Google Bookmarks, and it seems to show that we have already passed the controversial Google Buzz era. The giant search engine looks like it is searching for ways to deal with Buzz's failure and it launches more and more alternative features.

The lists in bookmarks is an experimental feature with the intention of helping you to easily share the listed sites with friends.

To use these lists, go to Google Bookmarks at google.com/bookmarks or by clicking “Manage all” in your Google Toolbar. From there, select the links you want to share and click “Copy to list.” Lists are private by default, but once you’ve created one you can share it with specific friends or even publish it to the web.

Sounds familiar? For us it does! With Buzz, Google wanted people to... share! And this is exactly what you are supposed to do with the lists. However, there is an essential difference between Buzz and lists - while Buzz stuff was made public by default, lists are private by default. This will allow users to keep full control over their links (not that they didn't have it on Buzz, but Google created then the feeling that they really didn't).

We assume that making the lists private by default Google's learned from Buzz's failure and now it avoids making the same mistake.

Additionally, Google inserts recommended relevant links to your results, as we are used to. This is how they explain it: "For example, once you’ve created your list of favorite Seattle attractions, Google will algorithmically analyze your list to identify other potentially relevant links, such as the Seattle Aquarium. Similarly, when we detect that a list is relevant to a specific region, we provide a map of those places and relevant info for each place, such as addresses, hours and reviews."

The feature is in experimental fase and they are willing to get feedback on it, so go give it a try!

Did you think Google Buzz's critics were just users? Well, no. American's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Pamela Jones Harbour has just said Google showed an “irresponsible conduct.” Because of this Google and other online companies may face tougher penalties if they don’t do a better job of protecting consumer privacy, she said.

In an article published by PC World, Jones Harbour talked really strong against the giant search engine (and now social media):

“Google consistently tells the public to ‘just trust us,’” she said. “But based on my observations, I do not believe consumer privacy played any significant role in the release of Buzz.”

A reasonable consumer would conclude that the launch of Buzz was a “material change” their relationship with Google’s Gmail, she said. “When users created Gmail accounts, they signed up for e-mail services,” she said. “Their expectations did not include social networking.”

As you may know, Buzz faced hard criticism since it was launched last February 9th, because it connected people by default without their concern and other problematic privacy stuff. Google apologized and introduced changes to Buzz's privacy default settings. However, the FTC said:

“I would like to see the commission take the position of intolerance toward companies that push the privacy envelop, then backtrack and modify their offerings after facing consumer and regulator backlash.”

Imagine you can find and be found anywhere on the web. Not just on Google. Not just on Bing. Not just on Yahoo. Not just on Twitter Search. Not just on search engines at all!

That's @anywhere, a new tool Twitter is developing to allow webmasters insert twitter on their websites and interact with their users without leaving the website.

"Our open technology platform is well known and Twitter APIs are already widely implemented but this is a different approach because we’ve created something incredibly simple. Rather than implementing APIs, site owners need only drop in a few lines of javascript." This is how Twitter's @Biz describes the new feature on Twitter's blog.

He adds, "when we're ready to launch, initial participating sites will include Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and YouTube."

He says that with @anywhere "web site owners and operators will be able to offer visitors more value with less heavy lifting."

Now, what do you think? Will it be useful? Would you insert the java code into your website?

Have you ever tried to share something with your friends through Google Reader and noted they didn't know they could have "feeding" information? Did you notice those who are interested in the same content you get through your RSS reader are not interested in taking the time to set the Reader up?

Google's noticed this, and they are trying now to engage even those who are interested in the content but who barely rub the tool that brings it. How? They are testing a new tool called Reader Play, which allows user to have a "Reader experience" without setting up a Google Reader account. And for Reader's users it is, of course, a new way to view their feeds.

Items are presented one at a time, and each item is big and full-screen. After you've read an item, just click the next arrow to move to the next one, or click any item on the filmstrip below to fast-forward. You can click the title or image of any item to go to the original version. It will open in a new tab.

As you browse, you can teach the tool which stuff you enjoy by clicking the "like" button, and it'll use that info to show you more items it thinks you'll like. You can also choose categories, and it'll personalize your stream to only show you stuff from those categories. What's cool about this tool is you don't even need a Google account to use Reader Play. However, if you want to star, like, or share items, you need to sign in. Since Reader and Reader Play share the same infrastructure, any actions you take in one will be reflected in the other.

Reader Play uses the same technology as the Recommended Items feed in Reader to identify and aggregate the most interesting items on the web. In addition, if you sign in Reader Play will also be personalized with items that people you’re following have shared in Google Reader, and items similar to ones you’ve previously liked, starred, or shared.

Since Reader Play is an experiment, it’s launching in Google Labs for now. If you are on Reader and you want to turn the Play on, you can switch to this view by clicking "View in Reader Play" from the feed settings menu.

What I didn't like of this feature is that I tried to share content directly from the share button and it didn't work. I guess they need to improve this and some more stuff before the tool be graduated from the Labs.

Meanwhile, give the Play a try here.

According to comScore Video Metrix, nearly 173 million U.S. Internet users watched 32.4 billion videos in January 2010. That means an average of 187 videos per viewer during the month.

135.4 million viewers watched 12.7 billion videos on Google's YouTube, which is an average of 93.4 videos per viewer. It also represents an increase of 50 percent versus year ago.

Now, with these numbers, what could be the Google's next step? How can they exploit these stats? Well, according to the Wall Street Journal, Google is testing a new TV programming search service with Dish Network. They are trying to combine the Internet with traditional TV:

"The service—which runs on TV set-top boxes using elements of Google’s Android operating system—allows users to search content from Dish as well as other Web video, like YouTube, and to personalize a lineup of shows, according to these people.

Viewers can search by typing on a keyboard, instead of using a remote control. Google hopes to link the service up with its nascent TV ad-brokering business, allowing it to target ads to individual households based on viewing and TV search data."

In a recent survey of US new TV buyers iSuppli found that 27 percent of TVs were connected to the internet, as published by SearchEngineLand:

Going back to comScore's survey, here are several rankings which could give a clear picture of the media market right now:

SEO world is not limited to Fulltraffic's packages or key terms. SEO involves everything you can do by yourself to keep your website on top of the results lists in every search engine.

By doing so, you ensure a reasonable ammount of traffic to your website, beyond Fulltraffic's help. This includes involving in social media, keeping up to date with news and making a great design for your website, etc.

Having a great design and providing a great service for your reader makes your website a reference, a place where people would love to come back.

Now Google has introduced a new feature to its search engine that rewards your efforts towards loyalty - stars. The new element allows readers to "star" a website on the results list, so that the next time they perform a search, that item will appear in a special list right at the top of their results when relevant.

That means if they star the official websites for SEO, they might see those results right at the top of their next search for [SEO]. Here's what the new "Starred results" feature looks like:

What's cool about stars is that you don't have to keep track of them. You don't even have to remember whether or not you starred something. When you perform a search you'll just rediscover your starred items right when you need them.

In addition, stars sync with Google Bookmarks and the Google Toolbar. That means that if you want to see your list of starred items and easily them, you can. Even beyond the results page, while browsing the web you can quickly click the star icon in Toolbar to create a bookmark, and those pages will start showing up in the new stars feature.

According to Google, stars in search replace SearchWiki. "In our testing, we learned that people really liked the idea of marking a website for future reference, but they didn't like changing the order of Google's organic search results. With stars, we've created a lightweight and flexible way for people to mark and rediscover web content. For people who like annotations, we have Sidewiki, a more powerful way for people to contribute and discover helpful information next to pages across the Internet. All your existing SearchWiki edits will be preserved with your Google Account."

The new feature was implemented last week and it should be available globally for all signed-in users.

Yahoo!, one of the world giant internet companies, has turned 15 yesterday, and they are celebrating with some hits that could keep the company on the top and growing.

Yesterday we talked about a painful hit Yahoo got from Google, which bought the Yahoo's default photo editor Picnik in favor of Google's Picasa. But that was after a much bigger Yahoo shot, which made a deal with Microsoft to compete with Google's search engine.

So what now? First of all, they became the default search engine on the new Motorola Backflip, AT&T’s first phone using the Google's Android operating system.

According to Search Engine Land, a Yahoo spokesperson said to them:

"We are happy that AT&T has chosen Yahoo! Search as the default mobile search service on the Motorola Backflip, AT&T’s first Android device. We have a long-standing relationship with AT&T and more than 80 carrier partnerships around the world for our award-winning mobile search experience. Mobile is a key corporate priority for Yahoo! and we are focused on making our personally relevant mobile Internet services, like search, available to the broadest audience possible on the widest range of devices."

Second, Yahoo's Ivan Davtchev unveiled yesterday at the SMX West Yahoo's answer to Google's Trends - TimeSense. According to Davtchev, the main differences with Google's tool are:

TimeSense uses language modeling to determine what queries are relevant to “right now”

TimeSense is better at identifying long-tail queries, whereas Google Trends is good at identifying “head” queries

However, the tool is not publicly available yet, and it may be somewhere in the future.

Yahoo was founded on March 1, 1995. Jerry Yang and David Filo posted about their start:

"We've had the unique opportunity to help create an industry and shape the online world, and will continue to focus on the values that brought us here --working hard, having fun, being passionate about your ideas, believing in each other, and always trying to invent the future. And as we celebrate 15 years today, we are even more excited than ever about what lies ahead, and the potential of Yahoo! and the Internet. Of course, we didn't set out to start one of the world's largest Internet companies or be leading a movement that has changed the world. We were just a couple of Stanford graduate students doing our research (supposedly) while our professor was on sabbatical."

If you had bought in at the opening $24.50 per stock back then and kept it through until today, you would have 24 shares for each initial one. So you would have $377.52 as of close of trading today - given the current value of $15.73, a little over 15 times your initial investment.

A few weeks after Microsoft-Yahoo deal was announced, Google has acquired Picnik, the popular and fast growing online photo editor. Interestingly, this service is the default editor tool for Yahoo's Flickr. Can we speak of a Google counter-attack?

Well, it is certainly not a "heart counter-attack", since it doesn't directly affect the companies' main product - search engine. However, it could definitely be read as a signal, as a territory marking, as a reminding from the huge Google - we are still here and we are still very powerful.

Picnik is cloud-based and in addition to Flickr, it is integrated directly into SmugMug and other photo repositories. It works directly with online photo libraries like Flickr, Facebook, and Picasa Web Albums. Users can also upload files to the service and download them again when they are done, after a few clicks.

Is is quite early to think that Google may use Picnik to enhance Picasa's usage while hurting Flickr's one, however, that option sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

Neither the ammount nor the terms & conds of the deal were revealed, but Picnik employee Virginia said in an official blogspot that the Seattle-based, 20 employees startup can now "think big". The announcement comes just a few days after another major milestone at Picnik, with the company announcing that it had surpassed more than one billion images edited on the site.

On the Google side, last month they acquired Aardvark, a social search engine and mobile Web email service reMail. Since September, Google has acquired 8 companies, and they've promised they will acquire one small company a month, and they will do a major deal once a year or every two years.

According to Picnik, "Google processes petabytes of data every day, and with their worldwide infrastructure and world-class team, it is truly the best home we could have found. Under the Google roof we’ll reach more people than ever before, impacting more lives and making more photos more awesome".

So what does this deal mean for users. Both Google and Picnik say that nothing by now, though Google said they'll be "working hard on integration and new features".

The editing capabilities Picnik offers are a natural complement to a Picasa, even though Picnik works in Flash, while most advanced Google apps use the slower JavaScript.
